Causes of Kidney Failure

The kidneys can become damaged in a variety of ways. The more common causes of ESRD in our environment include:

1
Hypertension (High blood pressure): if left untreated, can exert added force and cause damage or scarring to the components of the kidney that filter waste from the blood
2
Glomerulonephritis: a type of inflammatory kidney disease that causes the kidneys to leak protein and/or red blood cells into your urine
3
Diabetes mellitus: This damages small blood vessels in the body and makes it difficult for the kidneys to function properly
4 Sickle cell disease
5
Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE): systemic immune reaction where your body mistakenly attacks your own kidney tissue
6
Chronic Pyelonephritis, a chronic kidney infection often caused by repeated episodes of urinary tract infections

Other less common causes in Nigeria include:

1 Polycystic kidney disease (PCKD)
2 Renovascular disease
3 Kidney stones and other causes of obstructive uropathy.
4 Toxic nephropathy from the use of native herbs.
5 Analgesic nephropathy
6 For some people, the cause is unknown. This is also termed “idiopathic”.
